It’s not every day that a former Heisman Trophy winner and No. 2 overall draft pick is looking for a new team to quarterback in the middle of his 20s. The Broncos have a pressing need for a new starting quarterback and the former No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft of the Washington Redskins and 2011 Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin, III is one player Elway could consider to replace both Manning and Osweiler in Denver.

Griffin starred in his final year at Baylor University in the Big 12 in 2011 under head coach Art Briles and took the NFL by storm his rookie year as a dynamic duel-threat passer for the 2012 Redskins under former head coach Mike Shanahan.

Griffin never really recovered from his torn ACL in the 2012 NFC Wild Card Game against the Seattle Seahawks. His play in 2013-14 became erratic, costing Shanahan his job after the 2013, and ultimately Griffin was replaced by Kirk Cousins in Washington in 2015 as the new starting quarterback of the Redskins.

Washington franchised tagged Cousins and Griffin is now a free agent. He has unbelievable athleticism, but has struggled with leadership inside an NFL locker room. Griffin may have been cocky while with the Redskins, but his downfall in Washington may have humbled him to become a solid NFL quarterback once again.

Griffin’s talent is obvious, but will he mesh well with former Shanahan disciple and current Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak? Griffin will have to respect Kubiak’s ultra-conservative offense, which is easier said than done. He’s the most talented of the available quarterbacks the Broncos could start in 2016, but past character issues don’t make this the best long-term solution for Denver to make at the quarterback position.
