Teams revealed for Civil War II?
By Nick Tylwalk
Marvel has seemingly revealed which heroes are on which team for Civil War II, and there are some definite surprises.
The solo teaser images for Civil War II are over. Marvel released two intriguing group images for Team Iron Man, which is looking to “Protect the Future,” and Team Captain Marvel, the group that wants to “Change the Future.”
Plenty of surprises here. Just a few off the top of this writer’s head:
- Deadpool was shown playing both sides in his personal teaser, and he’s certainly never been above killing if he felt it was for the greater good. Plus he looks up to both Steve Rogers and Spider-Man, who are on the opposite team.
- Speaking of Spidey, he’s obviously applying his whole mantra of power and responsibility in a whole new way when it comes to “predictive justice.”
- As a member of the Illuminati, Black Panther destroyed whole universes to try to fend off the Incursions. To see him come down on the side of letting things be is a bit of a shock.
- War Machine almost always backs any play by BFF Iron Man, but not this time, it appears.
As revealed in earlier releases, Civil War II revolves around a character who can predict future events with a high degree of precision, causing a rift over what the Marvel superheroes should do with that knowledge. To wit:
"A new power has emerged, one that can predict the future—for good or ill— and the heroes of the Marvel Universe are faced with a choice: Wield the power of “predictive justice” to change the future as they see fit, or reject it and allow tomorrow to unfold unaltered."
The first Civil War featured some changes of heart along the way — most notably from Spider-Man, who started on Team Iron Man before switching before the end of the series — so Marvel could throw us some curves with these and other materials it releases before the event. The first salvo of Civil War II will be fired on Free Comic Book Day, which takes place this year on May 7.
