Ranking starting quarterbacks for each NFL team
9. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts
The potential is certainly there for Luck to rise well above the No. 9 ranking, and he has a good of a chance as anybody to take over the top spot once the careers of Brady and Rodgers wind down. However, Luck is nowhere near that level yet, and has plenty of areas to improve on.
Last season was a nightmare for Luck, as the Colts missed the postseason for the first time in his career. Luck posted the worst numbers of his career in 2015 and was limited to seven games due to multiple injuries, including a lacerated kidney that knocked him out for the final seven weeks.
In particular, Luck has poor decision-making at times, and his interception rate of 4.1 percent has to come down. Often times last year, Luck would fire deep passes into heavy coverage rather than take an open short route, leading to a number of mistakes.
While Luck may not have developed into the top three quarterback that so many envisioned yet, the Colts also need to do a much better job of surrounding him with the right talent. Indianapolis desperately needs a running back to take some pressure off of Luck, while the offensive line needs to be better to prevent further injuries.
We’ve seen more than a few flashes of Luck’s superior talent in the first four years of his career. However, many felt Luck would comfortably be a top five quarterback by this point, and there’s still plenty of work to do before he reaches that level.
Next: 8. Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers
