60. Casual

It might have just started, but Hulu’s Casual has already earned itself a place among the best of TV sitcoms. Zander Lehmann has written a show that’s bitingly funny but isn’t just biting for the sake of being “edgy” or “cool.” It’s legitimately laugh out loud hilarious. So many shows want to be about love, romance, relationships and/or family (or some combination of all four), but Casual is the rare series that actually breathes some fresh air into these topics.

The show couldn’t be better cast. Everyone knows how funny Michaela Watkins can be from her work on Saturday Night Live, but then there’s the revelation that is Tommy Dewey. It’s hard to believe the guy who is so rock solid dramatically as Mike Leighton on Code Black is over on this show being the kind of guy Mike would punch in the face. Mix in Tara Lynne Barr as the disaffected teenager that we actually want to spend time with instead of get away from and this is a TV family that’s worth our attention — and without a trope in sight.

Casual proves that the sitcom as a concept is not dead. Uproariously funny but at times also touching, surprising and even cringe-worthy in the best way, it definitely earned its Golden Globe nomination, and it should get even better when it returns for Season 2.
