5. The Rangers are familiar with their potential opponents in the opening rounds

If the New York Rangers are going to get back to the Stanley Cup Finals and win for the first time since 1993-94, it is almost going to have a Groundhog’s Day feel for the blueshirts in the playoffs this year.

Each of the last two seasons, the Rangers have taken on the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Eastern Conference playoffs. In 2014, New York staged an epic comeback in the series to win in seven games. Last season, things went a lot quicker for the Rangers as they took the first round series in five games.

In the second round, they will face either the Washington Capitals or the Philadelphia Flyers should they advance. Last season, the New York Rangers had to go seven games before knocking the Caps out of the playoffs in the second round. The season before that, New York went seven games in their first round series with the Flyers before advancing.

In the regular season, the Rangers didn’t have much success against the Penguins (0-3) or Capitals (2-3), while having a winning record against the Flyers (3-2).
