NFL Rumors: 5 teams who could sign Brian Hoyer
By John Buhler
There is a strong possibility that Hoyer will stay in the AFC South, especially if the Indianapolis Colts want a strong backup for franchise quarterback Andrew Luck. With long-time backup Matt Hasselbeck calling it a career at season’s end, Indianapolis is in need of a suitable backup. Perhaps Hoyer makes the most sense for the Colts entering 2016?
Indianapolis stumbled to a .500 8-8 2015 NFL season after Luck suffered a lacerated kidney in the Colts mid-season win over the Broncos. The Colts lost their stranglehold on the AFC South in Luck’s absence. The ancient Hasselbeck did well at first before a bad Colts offensive line let him down in the final weeks.
The Colts would be smart to avoid having to sing someone like failed Tampa Bay Buccaneers starter Josh Freeman off the street to back up Luck. Having Hoyer on the roster would be a huge boost for the Colts’ chances of orchestrating a deep AFC Playoffs run.
Indianapolis will have its work cut out trying to assert its normal dominance on what is an improving AFC South. The Tennessee Titans may still be rebuilding, but Houston and the Jacksonville Jaguars are definitely in the mix for AFC Playoff spots in 2016. Signing Hoyer would serve as a great security blanket for Luck in 2016. Indianapolis could win crucial games with Hoyer under center if need be should Luck get hurt again.
