Dallas Cowboys: 5 reasons they should sign Brian Hoyer
By Randy Gurzi
4. Hoyer is a veteran that Jason Garrett could trust
The most important job for any backup quarterback is to be someone the coach can trust. The team signed Brandon Weeden in 2014 (who ironically lost his job to Hoyer) but head coach Jason Garrett simply never trusted Weeden.
The former first round pick looked decent when he played in garbage time for Dallas during the 2014 season and was spectacular when Dallas beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2 when Romo first broke his collarbone.
The following few games though it became obvious that Garrett had zero faith in Weeden. The game plan consisted of short plays, and a lot of dump offs to running backs. Weeden was asked to do pretty much nothing, and the team never took the reins off of him.
Dallas also made a trade for Matt Cassel after Romo was hurt, which showed right away they didn’t believe Weeden could be the answer to get them any wins. They had more faith in a guy who wasn’t even on the team then Weeden, but Cassel quickly proved he shouldn’t have been trusted.
Again Garrett showed the importance of trust as offensive coordinator Scott Linehan wanted to turn to youngster Kellen Moore, but Garrett balked at putting in the youngster. He still believed the veteran gave them the best opportunity but finally had no choice but to turn to Moore, and the team still struggled.
Hoyer may not be a franchise guy, but he is smart and can earn the trust of Garrett and his staff. Should Romo miss any time again, Hoyer could be put on the field and the Cowboys wouldn’t have to shorten the field or their playbook as they did in 2015.
