5. Fresh Start

Last season was all about honoring Kobe Bryant and everything he was able to accomplish during his 20 tremendous years wearing the purple and gold. Bryant, who is hailed by many, including Magic Johnson, as the greatest Laker ever, won the 2008 NBA MVP award and brought five championships to an organization that now boasts 16 titles.

However, for all Bryant accomplished, his illustrious career was far from perfect.

For the majority of his career, the Black Mamba’s reputation for having contentious relationships with teammates often scared away marquee free agents from joining forces with him. Bryant’s personal relationship with the dominant Shaquille O’Neal even forced management to choose between the two, and most likely cost the organization several championship banners in the mid-2000s.

Bryant’s overbearing influence within the organization also helped Bryon Scott, who played for Los Angeles from 1983 to 1993, get the Lakers’ job due to their relationship with one another.

Now, with Bryant finally gone, the Lakers need a completely fresh start. They do not need another former “Laker great” who will attempt to restore the organization to its former glory.  They need someone to begin a new chapter and create a different identity for this young team. Scott Brooks can start a new era in Lala Land.
