15 biggest NFL quarterback busts of all-time
By John Buhler
Rick Mirer was an outstanding high school quarterback in Indiana and put together a strong four-year stint as the quarterback of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. When then head coach Tom Flores use the Seattle Seahawks’ No. 2 overall pick in the 1993 NFL, few thought Mirer would bust this magnificently.
Mirer did put together a strong rookie season for the 1993 Seahawks where he finished second in NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year behind only former Notre Dame teammate in Los Angeles Rams running back Jerome Bettis, now in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Mirer experienced a rapid decline in his final three years with Seattle. In his final three seasons in Seattle, Mirer threw for 29 touchdowns and 39 picks. He was then traded out of town to the Atlanta Falcons and then to the Chicago Bears before becoming strictly a career backup quarterback before retiring after the 2004 NFL season.
Poor completion percentage and far too many interceptions were the undoing for the former Notre Dame standout. Mirer finished his NFL career with 11,969 passing yards for 50 touchdowns and 76 interceptions, completing only 53.3 percent of his passes for a career quarterback rating of 63.5.
Mirer was able to put together a respectable career as a backup most notably with the Jets and the Raiders. He was capable of putting together a good spot start, but really nothing more as a professional.
