5. Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns were in a great position to get themselves a franchise quarterback this offseason, and they didn’t. They had a chance to trade for Colin Kaepernick from the San Francisco 49ers, and they didn’t.

Given their recent history, it seems like they will probably not even sniff Mettenberger, but they absolutely should they. Currently, the Browns roster features Robert Griffin III and Josh McCown atop the depth chart. No one should be confident going into the season with those two.

Mettenberger is a young guy with some upside. Currently the young quarterbacks on the roster are Austin Davis, Cody Kessler and Connor Shaw.

The LSU product could work under a highly respected offensive mind in head coach Hue Jackson and could sit behind either RG3 or McCown for a season as he learns the nuances from Jackson. The team passed on youth for the most part in the draft this season (probably due to being burnt in the past) but this is a low-risk, potentially high-reward move.

Mettenberger has a better chance of staying healthy than Griffin, is 12 years younger than McCown, and is a way better prospect than Kessler, Davis or Shaw. Still, these are the Browns, so this seems highly unlikely.
