22. Alex Reyes, St. Louis Cardinals

Alex Reyes’s season is set to get underway soon, as he completes a 50-game suspension for marijuana usage. The Cardinals have stated that once Reyes completes his tune up stint at extended spring training in Jupiter, Florida, he will be sent directly back to the club’s Triple-A affiliate in Memphis. This is a surefire sign that general manager John Mozeliak has faith in his talent, and could foreshadow preparation for a mid-summer promotion as well.

Reyes has as electric an arm as anyone in the minor leagues, working to a 2.49 ERA as he rose from rookie level to Double-A Springfield in 2015. He struck out 151 batters in 101 innings, all made as a starter. What is more is that he is beginning to apply the nuances of pitching as well, rounding out his secondary pitch selection and relying less on his fastball.

These are all the makings of a phenomenal talent, but one that has to get out of his own way with his decision making if he is to see his full potential as soon as he possibly can. Reyes could be next man up for the Cardinal rotation by midseason if any injuries befall them, as another of their top minor leaguers, Marco Gonzales, is out for the season with Tommy John surgery.
