2. Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs are a rebuilding team, but they would be very wise to at least check in on acquiring Tyson Barrie. While the Leafs prospect system is an embarrassment of riches at this point, there are two things that their prospect pool lacks: top pairing defensemen and goaltenders. Toronto has the resources necessary to not just trade for Barrie, but extend him long-term.

A trade for Barrie would give the Leafs a legitimate first pairing of Morgan Rielly and Barrie. He would give them a power play quarterback to help them quickly improve upon a power play that was among the league’s worst during the 2015-16 season. Trading for Barrie makes a ton of sense for the Maple Leafs even though they are a rebuilding team. Combine that with Jake Gardiner and Martin Marincin and that’s an underrated core of defensemen that you can build a team around.

An ideal for Toronto would have them trade from their forward depth. Perhaps Kasperi Kapanen would make sense? Kapanen, acquired in the Phil Kessel trade, finished the season strong for the Toronto Marlies to help increase his value. Any number of the Leafs’ strong forward prospects could be in play. They would likely have to include Pittsburgh’s first round pick in 2016 (also acquired in the Kessel trade). That would be a price more than worth it for the Leafs.
