1. Edmonton Oilers

If the Avalanche want to trade Tyson Barrie to get an excellent forward in return, there is no better fit for that return that the defensively anemic Edmonton Oilers. Edmonton has a number of forwards that they could trade in exchange for Tyson Barrie, and they have even expressed a willingness to consider trading the fourth overall pick if it helps them get a player who makes them better next season.

Jordan Eberle would make the most sense for the Avalanche to acquire. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is an excellent center, but the Avalanche appear to be set at center unless they unwisely decide to trade Matt Duchene. Eberle would be a great fit in Colorado with his speed and his finishing ability.

Edmonton would need to send more than just Eberle to get Tyson Barrie. On the other hand, Tyson Barrie isn’t worth the fourth overall pick and Eberle. So to even things out, the Oilers and Avalanche could swap first round picks in 2016. That allows both teams to have a first round pick and still get the player that each team most likely covets.

So let’s take a look at the hypothetical trade.

That’s a trade that works well for both sides.
