The Calgary Flames look to the 2016 offseason as a chance to build their foundation for the future.

Entering the 2015-16 NHL season, the Calgary Flames were viewed as being a potential Stanley Cup dark horse team. After an impressive 2014-15 season that saw them make a Cinderella run to the playoffs, Calgary improved during the offseason and everybody expected them to improve. Except they didn’t. Calgary ended the season with a 35-40-7 record, good for 26th in the league.

Entering the 2015-16 offseason, the Flames must improve their team. Not only that, but they must lock up arguably their two best players. They also face the daunting task of trying to find a goaltender in a market that could force them to have to overpay to get one.

Despite their unsuccessful season, Calgary is in a pretty good position. They have all the makings of an excellent blue line with Mark Giordano, T.J. Brodie, and Dougie Hamilton. Should they lock up their two young stars Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan, they’ll be in excellent shape offensively.

Calgary is a team to watch this offseason because they have the chance to significantly improve their team. Here’s how their offseason should play out.
