High Salary SP

Josh Tomlin-Cleveland Indians (8,600): Tomlin is the best of a thin crop at the top of the starting pitching group today.  Gio Gonzalez could end up being a good play, but with the weather, I’m going with Tomlin instead. He’ll be pitching in pitcher-friendly SafeCo and has allowed more than two runs just once in his last four starts.  Granted that one start was a pounding by the Rangers, but he comes into tonight 8-1 with a 3.54 ERA and a very solid 1.10 WHIP.  Tomlin isn’t an elite strikeout option, but he can give you solid innings and will try to help the Tribe earn a split of their four-game set in Seattle tonight.

Adam Wainwright-St. Louis Cardinals (8,000): The SP with the most name recognition and the most potential for an ace-line start tonight is the Cards’ Adam Wainwright.  Wainwright has had a rough year, though, and comes into his start tonight with a 5.40 ERA and a 5-4 record.  He did look much better in his last few outings including his last start when he allowed just two runs in seven innings to the Giants.  He struck out a season-high six in that outing and looks to be rediscovering his groove. Tonight, he’ll take on the Reds who drubbed him for seven runs on ten hits in 5.1 innings earlier this season, but his recent form and the way the Cardinals have been hitting are enough reasons to make him one of the stronger pitching plays of today’s limited slate.∗∗
