10 NFL head coaches most on the hot seat in 2016
By John Buhler
It’s interesting how Jason Garrett has quietly become Jerry Jones’ most trusted head coach during his 25+ years as the owner of the Dallas Cowboys. Garrett had been a backup quarterback to Troy Aikman in the heyday of The Triplets, was a former offensive coordinator, and was the interim head coach before taking over full-time several years ago.
Under Garrett, the Cowboys have usually had a great offense, but have still been essentially a .500 team during his tenure. Dallas on paper has one of the better offenses in the NFL with Tony Romo at quarterback, Dez Bryant at wide receiver, Jason Witten at tight end, arguably the best offensive line in football, and an exciting rookie tailback in Ezekiel Elliott from Ohio State.
While Garrett is an offensive-minded head coach, it has been horrendous defense that has kept the Cowboys from advancing deep into the NFC Playoffs. After Romo broke his collarbone in Week 2 versus the hated Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas crumbled to an awful 4-12 record in 2015, the worst of any team in the NFC.
Though Jones may be hesitant to part ways with clearly his favorite head coach of his time as majority owner, should the Cowboys not contend for either an NFC East crown or an NFC Wild Card berth this fall, it might be time for Dallas to go in a different direction with their head coach.
