Going into his fourth year on the job, San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy has to be one of the few coaches that is definitely on the hot seat. While San Diego made the AFC Playoffs in his first year as head coach in 2013, the Chargers have gotten progressively worse in the last two seasons.

San Diego finished with a terrible 4-12 record and the No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, despite having a future Hall of Famer still in his prime at quarterback in Philip Rivers. While ongoing stadium issues, absolutely no home field advantage, and constant threats of relocation have plagued the Chargers organization for the last few years, they have too much talent to be a bottom feeder in the AFC.

The Chargers usually hover around .500, but have now been deemed as the worst team in their own division entering 2016. The Kansas City Chiefs will make the AFC Playoffs, the Oakland Raiders are well on their way towards relevancy with their dynamic young corps, and while the Denver Broncos might struggle this year, they still won Super Bowl 50 on February 7.

Last season, San Diego at times looked like the team didn’t care about winning football games. The Chargers may have had a ton of injuries and other forms of adversity going against them in 2015, but their sheer lack of competitiveness in some games has to fall back on their offensive-minded head coach.

San Diego doesn’t have to win a ton of games for McCoy to return for a fifth year, but if the Chargers play the same uninspired brand of football they showcased in 2015, that means McCoy has again lost the locker room and owner Dean Spanos has to make a change with his head coach.
