High Salary SP

Clayton Kershaw-Los Angeles Dodgers (13,100): While it has become a big of a “given” since he has been so good for so long, Kershaw has been absolutely filthy so far this season.  He has a jaw-dropping 0.65 WHIP to go with his 1.46 ERA and 8-1 record coming into tonight’s start and has 109 strikeouts in 92.2 innings.  He has at least ten strikeouts in seven of his last nine outings and has failed to complete seven innings just one time in his 12 starts this season.  Tonight, he will have to go on the road to face the Giants, though, who are one of the few teams who have been able to do anything with Kershaw on a regular basis.  They did reach the Dodgers ace for three runs in seven innings back on April 15 in their previous meeting this season, but LA got the win and Kershaw improved to 2-0 at that point.  Tonight, Kershaw is a great option if you can scrape together the money to afford his 13K+ salary.

Stephen Strasburg-Washington Nationals (12,000): Strasburg is in a slightly better matchup than Kershaw but there have been some mentions of a strained calf that may be slowing the Nats’ starter down a bit.  His numbers this year are excellent coming into tonight’s start against the Phillies.  He is 9-0 with a 2.85 ERA and 100 K’s in 79 innings.  He has a nice 1.09 WHIP and is allowing hitters to hit just .219 against him.  Strasburg has put together double-digit strikeouts in three of his last four starts and in have of his 12 starts on the season.  Tonight, he’ll face the Phils who rank second-to-last in the league in batting average and runs scored. He hasn’t faced his NL East rival this season, but over the last three years he has gone a crazy 7-1 against the Phillies with a 1.52 ERA and 115 K’s in 88.2 innings.

Jason Hammel-Chicago Cubs (9,600): Hammel and the Cubs have a great matchup for the weekend as they roll into Atlanta to face the Braves.  Chicago comes into the series 41-17 while Atlanta is almost the exact opposite at 17-42. Hammel will look to take advantage of the Braves to improve his already sterling 7-1 record with a 2.14 ERA and 1.08 WHIP.  While he has just 56 K’s in his 63 innings, he is an extremely safe play given his matchup, the lineup behind him, and how well he has pitched lately.  In his 11 starts this year, Hammel has turned in seven quality starts and should be a great bet to get a win against the Braves tonight in Atlanta. He isn’t as dominant with strikeouts as Strasburg and Kershaw, but he can definitely still give you good points almost every time he takes the mound.

Gerrit Cole-Pittsburgh Pirates (9,000): Cole has allowed no more than three runs in ten of his 11 starts this season and comes into his start tonight with a solid 2.85 ERA despite a drop in his strikeout rate overall.  He did have a strong start against the Cardinals earlier this season holding them to two runs on six hits in six innings when the teams met in St. Louis on May 8.   He struck out seven in that contest and leveled his record at 3-3 with the win.  Tonight, he comes in 5-4 with a pair of no decisions in his last three games due to lack of run support.  Tonight, he’ll face St. Louis again as he looks to improve to 6-3 against the Cards in his career.
