High Salary SP

Cole Hamels-Texas Rangers (9,500): Hamels has pitched exatlcy seven innings in each of his last three starts allowing three, two, and one runs. He has allowed a homer in each of his last six outings, but limited the damage by not allowing many baserunners.  He comes into tonight’s start with a solid 3.14 ERA and a good 6-1 record.

He’ll put those numbers on the line in St. Louis tonight against a strong Cardinals lineup. In his last three starts against St. Louis, though, he has been pretty solid going 1-1 with a 2.53 ERA. Tonight, Hamels is my favorite play from the priciest arms on the board given his form and the strength of the red-hot Rangers’ lineup behind him.∗∗

Jose Quintana-Chicago White Sox (9,100): The other option I like tonight over 9K is White Sox starter Jose Quintana as he and the ChiSox open their series against the Indians in Cleveland.  Quintana faced the Tribe back on May 25th and allowed three runs on five hits while striking out eight in six innings.  He took the loss in that start and has been on a run of bad luck lately dropping six straight starts to fall to 5-7. Surely, he deserved the L in some of those games, but he has turned in four “quality starts” during that span with nothing to show for it.

He is a good option tonight coming off his season-high-matching ten strikeouts against Kansas City in his last start.  Quintana was dialed in early in the season, and I think that game was a sign he’s rediscovering his fine fantasy form. ∗∗

Matt Harvey-New York Mets (8,700): The Mets continue their homestand as they welcome in the Braves for a weekend set starting with Matt Harvey taking the mound tonight.  Harvey was dreadful to start the season but has been turning it around lately and is in a great matchup to continue that momentum tonight.

Harvey’s ERA was all the way up to 6.08 just a few starts ago, but in his last three outings he has lowered it to 4.66 by allowing just two total runs on eight total hits in 20 innings.  He has also had 17 strikeouts during that timespan which indicates his pitches are getting back  to their usual level of effectiveness.  Harvey is riskier than Quintana and Hamels, but I love his upside from just 8,700 as he faces the Braves at home at Citi Field.∗∗
