The Orlando Magic here would be getting a player that has a definite ceiling. He does not put a team over the top. But, like with their hire of Scott Skiles, he tends to get a team to a certain level. That level being in the Playoffs.

That may be a low bar, but the Magic are desperate to push the rebuild forward and take a step up. If acquiring a player like Gay can get them one step closer and give the young players the knowledge and confidence to lead, then it would be a good move.

Orlando needs a player who can score off the dribble and create his own offense. Gay can still do that. And then he can go into the background when Victor Oladipo or Aaron Gordon or Nikola Vucevic are ready to take over.

The Kings in this deal get a draft pick and can clear some cap space with Ilyasova’s non-guaranteed deal. Or they could keep Ilyasova and use him as a stretch-4.

It gives Sacramento some freedom to add extra players in free agency and be aggressive there, since Sacramento is not looking for a slow build.

Again, something small like this is probably more the direction the Magic would go if they made a deal in the Draft rather than being able to push chips in for one of the bigger fish.
