High Value SP

Carlos Martinez-St. Louis Cardinals (8,500): Martinez took a no-decision in his last outing but he pitched well allowing just four hits in seven shutout innings.  He had won each of his three previous starts to move to 7-5 on the season with a solid 3.17 ERA to go with an impressive 1.09 WHIP.  Martinez doesn’t get a ton of strikeouts like the pitchers in the upper tier tonight, but he has been effective lately with zero or one run allowed in three of his last four starts.  Martinez will be on the mound tonight at pitcher-friendly SafeCo against the Mariners, so he’s a solid upper-midrange play.∗∗∗

Jameson Taillon-Pittsburgh Pirates (7,200): The Pirates rookie sensation struggled in his last start against the Cubs on the road in a tough matchup in Wrigley Field.  He allowed four runs in four innings including three long balls.

Tonight, he’s in a much better place to succeed as he returns to PNC Park where the Pirates will take on the Dodgers.  In his previous start, he had allowed just two hits in eight shutout innings against the Mets, so there is definite upside to roll with tonight for the 24-year old prospect.

Jered Weaver-Los Angeles Angels (6,800): If you’re going cheap on your starting pitcher tonight, the lowest I’d go would be Weaver as he and the Angels take on the A’s again. Weaver faced Oakland in Oakland in his last start on Sunday throwing a three-hit, complete-game shutout. HE only struck out one batter in that outing, but improved to 6-6 on the season. He has been up-and-down all year, but over the last three years, he has been much better at home than on the road and had consistent success against the A’s. He’s risky, but an option to consider if you want to load up on high-price bats.
