Sacramento Kings

Picks: No. 13 Georgios Papagiannis, No. 22 Malachi Richardson, No. 28 Skal Labissiere, No. 59 Isaiah Cousins

To start this talk about the Sacramento Kings off on a positive note, here are the two positive things that I can say about their draft. For one, they were more than willing to be aggressive in regards to making deals to shuffle things around and create new opportunities. Secondly, I love the Isaiah Cousins pick at No. 59 at the end of the second round. The Oklahoma product is a fantastic defender and could add a great deal to one of the worst defenses in the NBA right away.

Other than that, though, I have absolutely no idea what the hell the Kings were thinking on Thursday night in the draft. While getting the No. 22 pick for Marco Belinelli was a coup for the Kings, the fact that they then squandered that by (I think, at least) reaching on a player who was quite bad for most of his lone season in college is less than stellar.

What’s worse though is that it looked like they traded the No. 8 pick to get a mid and a late first round pick so to not have to draft a big man in that mid-lottery position. Instead, they drafted two bigs to further cloud up their frontcourt rotation. That’s completely flawed logic and, if you’re one of the many that subscribe to the theory that the Kings are a hapless and hopeless organization, this only seemed to further that point.
