San Antonio Spurs

Picks: No. 29 Dejounte Murray

Go ahead and just give me a call whenever Dejounte Murray is winning Finals MVPs and leading the Spurs to more NBA Championships. Because let’s be honest, we all know that’s what’s going to wind up happening after the Spurs picked 29th in the 2016 NBA Draft.

Murray was a guy whose value was a bit hard to peg coming into the draft. While obviously a great athlete with a ton of skill, he didn’t have a great shot coming out of Washington, didn’t have a great overall game as a point guard and playmaker, and just simply had a lot of obvious flaws despite also having obvious upside. However, he’s also exactly the type of player that the Spurs always seem to find, identify, and then draft into their system where they initially play to their strengths while the player develops their weaknesses or other parts of their game.

It’s basically a science at this point the way that the Spurs operate at the end of the first round and it’s almost some kind of sorcery considering the success rate that they have. As such, for them to look at who was left in the draft and see a player like this who is just going to slide into their system perfectly and learn so much behind Tony Parker is just incredible. Not that we should’ve expected anything different, but a job well done to the Spurs even if it wasn’t earth-shatteringly great.

Final Grade: B
