2016 NBA free agency: 5 worst fits for Mike Conley
By John Buhler
For as highly dysfunctional as the Sacramento Kings are at present time, Conley signing with Sacramento may not be an entirely bad fit after all for the nine-year veteran. Sacramento already has an All-Star center in DeMarcus Cousins that Conley can form a great pick-and-roll partnership with.
Given that the Kings are probably going to sign Northern California native Ryan Anderson away from the New Orleans Pelicans any way this summer, Sacramento might be a surprisingly decent team with Cousins, Conley, and Anderson as their big three.
Conley and Anderson might be able to provide the stability that Cousins frankly has never had in Sacramento. Let’s not forget that Conley’s former head coach in Memphis Dave Joerger is the new head coach of the Kings, so both men know exactly what to expect out of each other on the hardwood. Seriously, Conley to the Kings is not a horrible idea for him to consider.
The problem is that there really aren’t a lot of ideal destinations for Conley to go in 2016 NBA free agency. His best bet is to stay in Memphis, but if he does leave The Bluffs, perhaps the Milwaukee Bucks or the Brooklyn Nets aren’t bad places to go. Milwaukee is really a point guard away from being a playoff team and Conley is exactly the type of point guard that new Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson would want in Brooklyn.
By going to Sacramento, Conley is taking a big gamble on his brand. He’d be leaving a top eight team in the West in Memphis for a Kings team that might get the No. 8 seed next spring. Joerger seems like the right hire, Cousins is talented, and Anderson is the perfect guy to kick the ball out to on the perimeter, but is Conley really going to be the player that saves hapless Sacramento from themselves?
