High Salary SP

Johnny Cueto-San Francisco Giants (10,700): The Giants got a win last night in Oakland behind Madison Bumgarner and now turn to Cueto as they head to the desert to face the Snakes.  Cueto got roughed up for six runs in six innings in his last start against the Phillies, but he had been very impressive in his starts leading up to that one.

On the year, he is 11-1 with an ERA of still just 2.42.  He doesn’t have as high a strikeout rate (98 K’s in 115.1 IP) as many of the elite starters, but he can turn in some nice performances.  Before his last start, he had only allowed more than two earned runs once in his previous 12 starts including a seven inning win over the D-Backs in Arizona back on May 12. He’s 1-1 against Arizona this season wth a 3.21 ERA, but he has been especially good on the road (7-0, 2.16 ERA), so look for a strong outing at Chase Field from the Giants second Ace.∗∗∗

Julio Teheran-Atlanta Braves (8,900): His team is still a mess, but Teheran has been pitching extremely well lately and has allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his last 13 starts.  He has allowed no runs and just six total hits in his last two starts while striking out seven in each shutout outing. Both those starts came against the Mets, and tonight he’ll face another division rival as he takes on the Marlins.

Teheran is only 3-7 this season despite a 2.46 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP.  He should be able to turn in another good start tonight against the Marlins as he looks for his first W of the season at Turner Field.  He’ll be opposed by Marlins recent callus Justin Nicolino, so I like his chances to get a win with another strong outing tonight.  I see Teheran as a great value play at this price given the roll he has been on recently.

Ian Kennedy-Kansas City Royals (8,600): Kennedy is another option who represents a good value since he’s in a solid matchup against the Phillies and coming off a great outing in his last start.  He fanned 11 in his last start probably his best as a Royal. He lasted seven innings allowing three hits and one run to improve to 6-6 on the year with a 3.96 ERA. Kennedy is risky since he hasn’t been very consistent this year, but against the Phillies at home he has a good chance of turning in a second good fantasy start in a row.
