First Baseman

High-Salary Option: Paul Goldschmidt-Arizona Diamondbacks (3,900): Goldschmidt had a great June with a .995 OPS while going 36-103 (.350) with four homers and 20 RBI.  Tonight, he’ll try to start July off with the same production as he faces Johnny Cueto and the Giants.  Cueto isn’t as bad a matchup for Goldschmidt as you might think since Goldy is 5-16 (.313) against him in his career with a double and a homer. ∗∗∗

High-Salary Option: Matt Adams-St. Louis Cardinals (3,900): Adams went an ugly 0-10 in the Cardinals last two games against the Royals, but he should be able to get back on track tonight as he takes on Matt Garza and the Brewers.  Adams is 8-15 against Garza in his career with two doubles and a home run.  He has scuffled a bit lately, but Garza on the mound should turn things around for him. ∗∗

High-Salary Option: Wil Myers-San Diego Padres (3,800): Myers’ owners have enjoyed a breakout season from the former top-prospect, and he’s starting to get some recognition nationally even though he plays in San Diego.  Myers is hitting .284 on the year with 18 homers and 55 RBI, but he absolutely raked in Juse going 32-98 (.327) with 11 homers and a 1.194 OPS. Tonight, he and the Padres open up their series with the Yankees as they face a hittable Nathan Eovaldi. ∗∗∗∗

Mid-range Option: Kendrys Morales-Kansas City Royals (3,700): Morales has been red hot over the last week with multiple hits in each of his last six games.  He is 16-27 (.593) overall with three doubles and three homers. Tonight, he’ll be at home where his .868 OPS is much better than his .657 OPS on the road, and I think he’ll be able to stay hot for the Royals.  ∗∗∗∗

Mid-range Option: Brandon Moss-St. Louis Cardinals (3,600): Moss went 1-3 yesterday with another home run giving him 17 on the season.  He hit eight of those 17 in June and finished the month with a 1.199 OPS.  He will likely be in the lineup again tonight against Matt Garza since he has pounded Garza in their past meetings going 7-13 (.538) with a double and a homer against the Brewers’ starter.  ∗∗∗∗

High-Value Option: James Loney-New York Mets  (2,800): Loney and the Mets will try to get their game against the Cubs in tonight despite threatening forecasts.  If they do play, Loney is a nice value option since his went 30-102 (.294) in June after joining the Mets and is 13-41 (.317) against Cubs’ probable starter Jason Hammel.  Loney had three doubles, three homers, and nine RBI in those meetings, so look for him to produce nice numbers from under 3K. ∗∗∗

High-Value Option: Yonder Alonso-Oakland Athletics  (2,300): If you have to go even cheaper at 1B, check out Alonso who went 28-87 (.322) for the month of June raising his season average to .250.  He has homered in each of his last two games and will probably get the start tonight even though he’s a lefty who would be facing a lefty in Jeff Locke. However, Locke hasn’t been lights out against lefties and has really struggled on the road (2-4, 7.36 ERA), so it’s still a matchup to consider.
