This one may be tougher to pull off given that the Brewers are in the same division. Still, it is not like the Brewers going to be competing any time soon. The Cardinals giving up prospects to a division rival would be the tougher pill to swallow.

With that said, it might not take too much to acquire Jeffress. Jeffress is 28 years old this year and has been a journeyman before taking the closing job for the Brewers.

This year he has converted 23 out of 24 save chances this year. He has posted a career low in walks per nine and ERA.

He is under team control through 2019. Jeffress is in arbitration and after his first season getting saves should be in for a decent raise. That means that the Brewers, who are much more than a closer away from competing should not be looking to pay him more than his worth.

Therefore if they can recoup something of value from the Cardinals they will be happy to move on from him. The Cardinals may have other names on their wishlist above Jeffress, but Jeffress should be easier to acquire than most. He fixes the biggest need on the team, he is low cost and he if they like what they see they can hold onto him for the next three years.
