MLB Trade Deadline: 6 best pitching rentals available
Chacin has already moved once this year after the Braves dealt him to Los Angeles in May, and should be traded again to a team in need of depth before the deadline.
The Angels’ roster looked lacking heading into the season even with Mike Trout, as a terrible farm system and several bad contracts appeared to be catching up with the club. Garrett Richards’ season-ending injury ended whatever playoff chances Los Angeles had, and it is well out of contention at 37-52.
Beyond Kole Calhoun and an unfathomable Mike Trout trade, the Angels don’t appear to have a lot of pieces to sell this summer. Still, expect Los Angeles to trade Chacin, who is a free agent this winter and could eat some innings as a back-end starter or swingman.
Chacin has a 5.79 ERA (4.49 FIP) with 60 strikeouts and 33 walks in 82.1 innings between the Angels and Braves this season according to FanGraphs.com. Those numbers don’t inspire a lot of confidence, but Chacin was a decent pitcher from 2010-2012 and at least had a run of solid outings in April and early May this year.
While no contender is going to want Chacin pitching high-leverage innings, he could be a capable enough injury replacement if needed. The Angels could also move veteran rentals Tim Lincecum or Jered Weaver, although neither appear particularly useful at this point.
