In an extreme seller’s market for starting pitching, who are some of the top rentals available at the MLB Trade Deadline?

With under three weeks to go until the 2016 MLB Trade Deadline, teams in need of starting pitching help are frantically searching for answers.

This year’s deadline is shaping up to be a little less active than usual, as few clubs are willing to sell with two Wild Card spots in each league up for grabs. In addition, the established sellers out there like the San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves and others don’t have much to offer in the way of starting pitching.

One big chip is already off the board, as the Chicago White Sox acquired James Shields in early June, a move that has not worked out well so far. The market is so weak that the Los Angeles Dodgers‘ trade to get Bud Norris might be one of the bigger pitching moves of the deadline.

As the price for starters will be high, some pitchers with multiple years of team control like Sonny Gray and Julio Teheran could be on the move. With the cost so inflated, the deadline could produce some stunning trades as well, with Zack Greinke or Jake Odorizzi standing out as possible candidates.

However, teams looking for one-year rentals will not have an easy time in the trade market. While teams like the Baltimore Orioles or Kansas City Royals would love to add cheap starting pitching help without a long-term commitment, there just isn’t much available.

Even so, look for these six one-year starting pitching rentals to be on the move prior to the August 1 trade deadline.
