High Salary SP

Jose Fernandez-Miami Marlins (12,000): It’s easy to see why the Marlins’ Ace is so expensive tonight as he and Miami face off with the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.  Fernandez has at least seven strikeouts in each of his last six starts including two games with over a dozen.  He did get knocked around for nine runs (six earned) two starts ago in Atlanta, but has allowed one run or fewer in eight of his last ten starts overall.

He enters tonight’s start with a 2.52 ERA and a  1.02 WHIP while striking out 154 batters in just 107.1 innings. He does have an elevated road ERA (4.01 compared to 1.53 at home), but he is in a great matchup against the Phillies so even if he does give up a couple runs his elite-level strikeout numbers should compensate nicely.  The only downside to owning Fernandez is his hefty price tag.

Corey Kluber-Cleveland Indians (10,600): If you can’t quite stomach Fernandez’s price, Kluber is the next most expensive option I would take a look at for tonight.  Kluber also had a rocky outing two starts ago, but he bounced back with a nice start the Friday before the All Star break and will look to pick up where he left off tonight against the World Champion Royals.

Kluber is just 9-8 on the season, but he has turned in three quality starts in his last four outings including masterful starts at home against the Yankees and Rays. He did take a beating from the Blue Jays at the beginning of the month which is one of the reasons his ERA still sits at 3.61.  He is in a tricky matchup against the Royals tonight who he is 1-1 against in two starts this season.  In one of those outings he was dominant while struggling in the other. The one consistent contribution all season, though, has been Kluber’s K’s. He has averaged just about a strikeout per inning all season in almost every split, so look for him to at least produce punch outs tonight. ∗∗∗∗
