Sean Monahan wants long-term deal with Calgary Flames
Sean Monahan wants a long-term deal with the Calgary Flames and he is willing to take less money to help them win a Stanley Cup.
There is perhaps no better feeling in professional sports than raising the Stanley Cup. Doing so requires an excellent team, depth all over the ice, and yes, a tad bit of luck. The thrill of raising the Stanley Cup can drive players to be willing to do a lot of things. One of those things is take less money to help the team. Restricted free agent center Sean Monahan of the Calgary Flames is willing to do that.
“I definitely want to be there for a long time,” Monahan said, via NHL.com. “So I would prefer a longer-term contract… our goal is to bring a Stanley Cup to Calgary, so if that’s what it is, that we can bring other players in, to have a little extra money room and get them in to help us to be a better team, I think that’s the idea.”
The Flames had a disappointing 2015-16 season after becoming the NHL’s darlings in 2014-15 due to an unlikely magical playoff run. Their offense has been a lot of fun to watch thanks to Monahan and fellow restricted free agent forward Johnny Gaudreau. Could Gaudreau and Monahan do something similar to what Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane have done in getting matching deals to help their team win?
Monahan scored 27 goals and set a career-high with 63 points in 2015-16. 20 of his 63 points came on the power play. Monahan turns 22 in October and locking him up long-term would be an excellent decision for the Flames.
