5. Trade for Geovany Soto

The Orioles could stand a cheap upgrade as far as catching depth. Matt Wieters is a very capable starter and was an American League All-Star. However, Baltimore needs to remember that he is coming off Tommy John Surgery in 2014. His health is a legitimate concern moving forward. Caleb Joseph has been strong behind the plate but has not put up the numbers that justify his defense. A better backup catcher would not only give the O’s an option if Wieters gets injured, it would also allow them to keep him fresh.

Geovany Soto of the Los Angeles Angels could be a very cheap option. He is a proven hitter (career OPS+ of 102) who is still competent defensively. Being strong defensively is something that is important for the O’s, who take pride in being one of the best fielding teams in the league.

Joseph cannot be trusted to hold down an everyday job, nor is he good enough for the O’s to be able to give Wieters more rest. Soto would allow the Orioles to rest Wieters. The best part? He likely wouldn’t cost much at all. That’s important because the O’s have other needs that they have to address at the deadline.
