5 NFL teams desperate enough to sign Nick Foles
By John Buhler
Eli Manning never gets hurt, but what if he stumbles in 2016 and the New York Giants have to use either of their inexperienced backups in Ryan Nassib or Logan Thomas? Newly promoted head coach Ben McAdoo might be a creative offensive mind, but losing Manning for just a few weeks has to be beyond terrifying for the Giants’ rookie head coach.
Nassib was selected in 2013 out of Syracuse University before McAdoo came to New York, so he wouldn’t have any allegiances to the former Orange signal caller. Thomas has some NFL experience with the 2014 Arizona Cardinals but didn’t seem to have the ability to grasp a playbook in college at Virginia Tech, let alone what Bruce Arians wanted to run in Glendale.
Just to be safe, the Giants should look at bringing Foles into the fold. Manning likely will play all 16 games for the Giants, but should anything happen to New York’s franchise quarterback and two-time Super Bowl champion, the Giants will struggle to get first downs, much less win football games in a winnable division.
With offensive line play being worse than it has ever been with the current collective bargaining agreement in place, one missed block by a blind side protector could put Manning on injured reserve and the Giants picking in the top five of the 2017 NFL Draft. With Foles at backup quarterback, the Giants can at least tread water and hold their own in the competitive NFC East should anything bad happen to Manning.
Next: 4. Houston Texans.
