Brady Ellison had already tallied a silver medal during the 2016 Rio Olympics, as the United States finished second in the team event. But with men’s number-one seed Kim Woo-jin having been eliminated yesterday in the Round of 32, the second-ranked Ellison — who bested teammate Jake Kaminski to advance to the Round of 16 — is now in prime position to take home the gold for Team USA.
There were no big surprises on the men’s side Tuesday, with both top-10 archers carrying the day. Aside from Ellison, India’s Atanu Das beat Cuba’s Adrian Puentes, sending the six-seed into the Round of 16. The biggest upset of the day came in the Round of 64, where 46th-seed Elias Malave Burgos of Venezuela beat 19th-seeded Wang Depang of China.
The number-two seed on the women’s side also advanced on Tuesday, with South Korea’s Chang Hye-jin beating Lidiia Sichenikova in the Round of 32. She will now join fellow countrywoman Kim Bo-Bae in the Round of 16, where the duo will try to secure more medals for South Korea. Top-seeded Choi Mi-sun, also of South Korea, begins her quest Wednesday.
The biggest upset of the day for the women happened in the round of 32, where tenth-seeded Kaori Kawanaka of Japan’s fell to Great Britain’s Naomi Folkard.
The final group of men and women will shoot on Wednesday, as the field shrinks down to 16 archers from each side. The women’s Round of 16 and medal matches will take place on August 11, with the men battling it out for gold on August 12.
