2016 Rio Olympics women’s basketball results from Wednesday, August 10 on Day 5 of the games
It was Group B that was back in action for Day 5 of the 2016 Rio Olympics women’s basketball competition on Wednesday, August 10. Not only did that mean that the favorites to win the gold medal in USA Basketball were back in action, but also that another hot team like Canada would be taking the floor. All in all there were some intriguing matchups with big implications moving forward.
Wednesday started off with China taking on Spain. The Chinese women were still searching for some sort of consistency in Rio after a big loss and then a big win. Meanwhile Spain were looking to rebound from losing to the United States in their third game of the Olympics women’s basketball competition. When the final buzzer sounded, though, it was Spain picking up the 21-point victory.
USA Basketball were next on the docket as they were up against arguably their toughest opponent to date at Rio 2016 in Serbia. Serbia kept it close for about the first 15 minutes of action, only trailing by single digits midway through the second quarter. Thanks to a huge showing from Diana Taurasi and then big contributions off the bench from Breanna Stewart, though, the United States pulled away for another huge win, 110-84.
Finishing off Day 5 of the Olympics women’s basketball slate was a matchup between Canada and Senegal with the latter also searching for their first victory in Rio. Though the Senegal team put forth their best effort of the Olympics to date, the Canadian women were able to survive a matchup where they struggled. Canada ultimately prevailed, 68-58.
