Oklahoma

Oklahoma’s first love is football. Naturally, its Mount Rushmore includes two football coaches.

Barry Switzer coached the University of Oklahoma Sooners for 25 years. He also coached the Dallas Cowboys from 1994 to 1997. Switzer won three national titles with the Sooners and a Super Bowl with the Cowboys. His record with the Sooners is 157-29-4, including a conference record of 100-11-1. Switzer won 12 Big Eight titles in Oklahoma.

Bob Stoops is the current head coach of the Sooners football team. Since being hired in 1999, Stoops has put the Sooners back on the map. He won the 2000 national title with the Sooners and has won nine Big 12 titles with them as well. His 179 wins are a school record.

Russell Westbrook is a huge reason why Oklahoma City has fallen in love with basketball. Westbrook, along with Kevin Durant, made the Thunder one of the most exciting teams in the NBA. Unlike Durant, Westbrook will be sticking around after signing a three-year extension. The Thunder will try to contend by building their team around the point guard.

Mickey Mantle was born in Spavinaw, Oklahoma. Mantle led the New York Yankees to seven World Series titles and made it to 20 All-Star teams. Though he was more known for his time in the Big Apple, Mantle was born and raised in Oklahoma. He’s arguably the state’s best athlete and deserves to be on Oklahoma’s Mount Rushmore.
