6. Allen Fieldhouse

The Kansas Jayhawks are one of the five most storied college basketball programs in the country. They’ve dominated the Big Eight/12 for decades, despite being in rural Lawrence, Kansas. How have they been able to do it? The sport of basketball was reared there by two of the games most influential coaches.

Dr. James Naismith took the game he created in Springfield, Massachusetts on the road to the University of Kansas in the sport’s infancy. It quickly became the state’s most beloved sport. One of Naismith’s first players was his eventual coaching successor, Phog Allen.

Kansas has only had seven head coaches in history. To coach the Jayhawks in Allen Fieldhouse and win championships on James Naismith Court is a privilege unlike any other in the men’s college game today.

Like a few midwestern college basketball arenas, Allen Fieldhouse has an ambience of dominance few can even remotely question. This is where basketball spent its childhood and teenage years. There is no doubt the ghosts of Naismith and Allen come back to Lawrence to see shining examples of how the game of basketball was meant to be played.
