3. Hinkle Fieldhouse

Indiana’s Basketball Cathedral has to make the list, right? Of course it does, as Hinkle Fieldhouse is the most important basketball venue in Indiana. It has been home to the Big East’s Butler Bulldogs since 1928 and is named after former Bulldogs head coach Paul D. “Tony” Hinkle, who coached the program for 41 seasons.

While Butler had a brief resurgence under former head coach Brad Stevens, what makes Hinkle Fieldhouse so special is the Indiana High School Basketball Championships that have been played there over the years.

Perhaps the greatest game in any of those high school tournaments was the shocking upset Milan High School pulled on Muncie Central in the 1954 finals. This basketball story was the inspiration for the beloved movie Hoosiers. Without Hinkle Fieldhouse, how would this story have ever made it to the silver screen?

Hinkle Fieldhouse is so revered in Indianapolis that it served as the architectural inspiration for the Indiana Pacers’ Bankers Life Fieldhouse down the road. This is basketball’s primary house of worship in Indiana. The ghost of Jimmy Chitwood is joined there by generations of Hoosier hoops fans.
