J.T. Barrett: Stock down

After an impressive seven touchdown performance against Bowling Green in the season opener, Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett looked sluggish against Tulsa. After an interception by the Ohio State defense, Barrett and company were in prime real estate at the 16-yard line. The offense only managed four yards on that drive, and was forced to take an early field goal.

The ensuing offensive drives for Ohio State looked like this: Fumble by Barrett, punt, punt, field goal, downs, punt. Not a great start for one of the best teams in the country.

Urban Meyer must have gotten to his team at half time, as they scored 28 unanswered points in the second half.

Of the 48 points scored by Ohio State, J.T. Barrett was responsible for just 14. The quarterbacks’ only scores of the day didn’t come from his arm, but instead from his legs. Barrett ran the ball 16 times for 55 yards, and was able to cross the goal line twice.

Next years draft class presents several major questions at the quarterback position, and J.T. Barrett is one of them. Coming out of an offense where he’ll never call a play, work under center, or audible, he’s at a major disadvantage when it comes to being ready for the NFL.

We’ve seen the differences between Jared Goff coming out of a spread offense and Carson Wentz running a pro-style when it comes to translating at the next level. Wentz is calling audibles, recognizing defenses, and taking command of the offense. Goff is wearing sweats behind Case Keenum and Sean Mannion.

With that disadvantage, J.T. Barrett will have to blind NFL teams with his stats in order to have a future as a franchise quarterback.
