Ranking Florida’s quarterbacks since Tim Tebow by sadness factor
By John Buhler
7. Tyler Murphy
It’s fair to say that former Gator Tyler Murphy overachieved in his career as a college quarterback. He was only a two-star recruit coming out of high school before committing to Florida in 2010.
Murphy didn’t see the field for the Gators until the disastrous 4-8 2013 campaign. He was Driskel’s primary backup in 2013. Murphy was thrust into duty when Driskel broke his leg in Florida’s game against Tennessee. He had to start the next six games for the Gators.
Murphy would hurt his shoulder in the Gators’ homecoming loss to Florida and would never play another snap for them. He would transfer at the end of the season to Boston College to play for his former coach Steve Addazio.
While at Florida, Murphy would complete 60.5% of his passes for 1,216 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions. He would flourish under Addazio as Boston College, as Murphy was now allowed to run in the Eagles offense.
Murphy ran for over 1,000 yards and passed for over 1,600 in his one year at Boston College. Florida had a dual-threat quarterback in Murphy and didn’t use him correctly in 2013.
