Sportsnet’s broadcast of the Friday night game between the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames had an unexpected visitor – a fly.

The battle for Alberta between the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames is always a hot ticket in town. It turns out humans aren’t the only animals with an interest in the game.

On Friday Oct. 14, a huge fly showed up at the Oilers and Flames game, landing on one of Sportsnet’s cameras.

The fly is pretty scary because it landed right on the camera. Viewers got a bit confused, trying to figure out what the heck was going on. This is hardly the first time an animal has had fun with a camera and it certainly won’t be the last.

Memorably, a stray cat showed up just before a playoff game between the San Jose Sharks and Nashville Predators. The Sharks wound up rallying behind the cat and even finding it a good home. Sharks forward Patrick Marleau and his family adopted the cat.

You can’t blame the fly for showing up to the game. Calgary and Edmonton have been going back and forth the entire game. Connor McDavid has led Edmonton, impressing the entire game with a goal and an assist so far. The Flames have gotten goals from Sean Monahan and Michael Frolik, but Edmonton currently has a 4-2 lead.

Calgary lost to Edmonton earlier this week, as Edmonton beat the Flames on their opening night. So far, the Flames have struggled mightily. Granted, it has only been two games so far. However, the Flames were expected to be serious Stanley Cup contenders after trading for Brian Elliott and signing Troy Brouwer.

They might be exiting Friday’s game with an 0-2-0 record to start their season, which is certainly less than ideal. Meanwhile, Edmonton might start 2-0-0 to start their season.
