4. LSU will have a strong defensive identity

One of the most important things when hiring a new head coach is knowing what type of team it will be: offensive or defensive-minded. While Orgeron will look to improve the sputtering LSU offense, he is an outstanding defensive football coach.

To win in the SEC, it is paramount to be a team that knows its identity. Most SEC teams tend to be defense-first football teams. LSU may have had a former offensive lineman as head coach in Les Miles, but LSU has been a team built on defense ever since Nick Saban left East Lansing for Baton Rouge over 15 years ago.

Orgeron is a former defensive lineman himself. He already has the front-seven playing well under him at LSU while he still had the interim tag slapped on him. Orgeron got great play from his cornerbacks as well in his seven games as the interim.

Being a defensive-minded football team gives the Orgeron era in Baton Rouge a solid foundation heading into 2017. The Tigers will have to rectify their offense, but the Orgeron era will be off to a good start knowing what side of the football its team can lean on.
