Play of the Week: Robert Spillane picks off Greg Windham to win MAC Championship

The Play of the Week actually happened on Friday night at Ford Field in Detroit of all places. That was where the 2016 MAC Championship between the Ohio Bobcats and the Western Michigan Broncos was taking place.

The Broncos had a great opportunity to get to the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic as the Group of 5’s New Year’s Six representative. With a perfect season on the line, the Broncos got a big play from its defensive leader when they needed it the most.

Driving to potentially win the game down 29-23, Ohio quarterback Greg Windham was picked off by Western Michigan linebacker Robert Spillane. Spillane would quickly take a knee to set up victory formation for the Broncos offense.

With that win and a loss by the Navy Midshipmen in the 2016 AAC Championship Game, the Broncos would get that Cotton Bowl bid by moving to 13-0 the year. Western Michigan will face Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl in Arlington in the New Year’s Six.
