Kansas City Chiefs. 4. player. 124. . AFC. West

Ideally, Mayfield would need to go to a dome team, preferably in the south. However, a decent exception to the rule might be with the Kansas City Chiefs. Andy Reid’s underneath passing game wouldn’t be too terribly difficult for Mayfield to grasp as a backup, right?

Kansas City has to realize that Alex Smith’s best days are behind him. He refuses to stretch the field with his arm to avoid throwing picks, and once the Kansas City running game becomes stagnant and Smith can’t move the chains with his legs anymore, he’ll be run out of town faster than Matt Cassel or Brady Quinn.

Mayfield could be a better version of what Kansas City hoped Aaron Murray could be. The Oklahoma signal caller is bigger, more athletic and is more mobile that Murray was coming out of Georgia. Murray might be the more accurate of the two collegiate passers, but Mayfield could work playing under Reid.

Reid’s offense is tremendously conservative but does often make use of his quarterback’s scrambling ability. Obviously, Mayfield will want to go deep, but will Reid let him? Frankly, wouldn’t it be better in some instances for Kansas City to roll with a passer that likes to go vertical? Worst case scenario, an interception can be treated as a bad punt.

Smith may be the guy this year and next, but Kansas City does need to prepare for another fallout at the quarterback position. Quarterback may be a position that the Chiefs look to upgrade in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Until then, they could always use a competitive guy like Mayfield in the quarterback room and on the practice field. He just feels like a low-risk, high-reward quarterback prospect. A coach like Reid is more likely to get a return on his quarterback investment than most.
