North Carolina State Wolfpack

Last week: 1-2
Last rank: N/A

NC State ended their week by losing to UNC by 51 points and giving up their most points ever to the Tar Heels. After starting conference play with an 18-point loss to an unranked Miami team, it seems like this was a week to forget for the Wolfpack. The news wasn’t all bad out of Raleigh, though, as they beat down then-ranked Virginia Tech while heralded freshman Dennis Smith Jr. put up 27 points in the second triple-double in school history. After he struggled a bit to start the year, Smith is coming around nicely though he is still plagued by inconsistency and is the subject of questions about a lack of effort on defense. The Pack have three games this coming week against Boston College, Georgia Tech, and Pitt. Taking on some of the worst in the ACC in their next couple of games gives them a good chance to boost their confidence before getting into the meat of their schedule.

Virginia Tech Hokies

Last week: 2-2
Last rank: N/A

The Hokies started off a wild week of ACC play by taking down a top-five Duke squad and was ranked in the AP Poll after such an impressive showing. Unfortunately they dropped their next two games on the road, one being a blowout to NC State. Dennis Smith Jr. gave them the business, finishing with a triple-double, but for a ranked team a better showing was expected. The other loss came to new powerhouse Florida State in a loss that’s looking better and better (as far as losses go) by the day. They closed out their week by taking down a seemingly rejuvenated Syracuse team at home. Virginia Tech plays just one game in the coming week, hosting a strong Notre Dame team. A win over the Fighting Irish would be a big step back in the right direction for a Hokies team that is probably looked to get back into the AP Poll.
