College Basketball AP Poll Week 11: Winners and losers
Winner: West Virginia Mountaineers (No. 10 up to No. 7)
West Virginia was the first team to get a crack at the new No. 1 in the Week 10 college basketball rankings and the Mountaineers swung hard and didn’t miss. They finished with a 21-point drubbing of the Baylor Bears at home and truthfully, it wasn’t even that close.
The Mountaineers come in at No. 7 this week, jumping from the 10th spot in last week’s rankings and they are tied, in votes, with Creighton. The Mountaineers are the third-ranked Big 12 team in the country, which just goes to show how elite the top of that conference truly is — it may, however, be a little top-heavy.
Avoiding a letdown after a big upset win over No. 1 Baylor, followed by a questionable court-storming, the Mountaineers went on the road and took down Texas, 74-72. The Longhorns weren’t exactly expecting an upset with a 7-9 overall record, but they have the talent to keep with teams like West Virginia.
Bob Huggins’ team escaped Austin with a win, ensuring that they would move up in this week’s AP Poll. The next three games (Oklahoma, at Kansas State and at home versus Kansas) will tell us a lot about this basketball team. If they win all three, the Mountaineers will easily have cracked the top five.
