5. The Flint Tropics

It’s common to ask how well a team run by Will Ferrell would be able to do against NBA competition. When it comes to the Flint Tropics, it’s an even more prescient question. Luckily, he will have successful rapper and strange person Andre 3000 on his side as well as Woody Harrelson. Woody Harrelson showed that he could play basketball pretty well in White Men Can’t Jump and also proved that he’s willing to kill a man in the Hunger Games film series. If you’re going to stock a Ferrell team, this is a good place to start.

Sure, the Tropics would be coming from the ABA, but as discussed in the lovely Over and Back NBA podcast, teams coming from the ABA actually fared quite well in early seasons after the merger. The Tropics were fourth in the league at the end of their final season. That’s legit.

But truthfully, this all rests on one thing: motivation. As we know, the Flint Tropics no longer exist. They played their respective tails off at the end of their last season because they wanted the chance at the NBA. That chance never came. While there was a sort of happy ending, would they be fulfilled? Would they be hungry?

More importantly, what would they be playing for this time? I have an idea. The NBA is considering expansion. Seattle looks like a good bet, but then we’d need another team in the East. Where better than Flint? If Jackie Moon and the Tropics had that carrot dangled in front of their faces, we could see fireworks.
