5. Dallas Mavericks

Since the turn of the century, the Dallas Mavericks have missed the playoffs only once. However, unless they manage to dramatically turn things around, this season looks like it’ll be the second time. They’re not exactly in a rebuilding phase so staying relevant as a consistent playoff team still seems important for them. A player like Carmelo Anthony provides more firepower for them and can help their cause. However, the question remains as to what kind of deal could work for both teams.

One deal that can work is Dallas sending Wesley Matthews and Dwight Powell to the Knicks in exchange for Anthony. The Mavericks can also throw in a lottery-protected first round pick to make it more desirable. This would give Dallas a starting lineup of Melo, Dirk Nowitzki, Harrison Barnes, Seth Curry and Deron Williams whenever he’s healthy. It’s a lineup that’s more competitive than their current one and could challenge for a playoff spot.

In return for Carmelo, the Knicks get an immediate defensive upgrade with Matthews. Additionally, he isn’t a bad scorer either, despite being a little streaky at times. They also receive a young player with some potential in Dwight Powell. His current numbers don’t immediately jump out at you, but the upside is there if he receives more than the 18-20 minutes that he gets. His averages on a per-36 minutes basis currently sit at 13.6 points, 8.9 rebounds, 2 steals and 1.2 blocks per game. He’s also only 25-years old so there’s still room for improvement. If the Mavericks also throw in a protected first round draft pick, then it could be enough to get New York to say yes.

Even though this deal could work, it’s almost a guarantee that Anthony wouldn’t agree to it. He wants to win a championship sooner rather than later. Playing in Dallas won’t make that possible even though he could help them get into the playoffs. Perhaps he would be okay with something like this back in 2011 or 2012. Unfortunately, it’s 2017 and Carmelo Anthony going to the Mavericks at this point is probably not a situation he wants any part of.
