Jamaal Charles: 5 best fits in NFL free agency
By Brad Weiss
For Aaron Rodgers, there seems to be no issue with the fact that he has had absolutely no help at the running back position in recent seasons. The Packers started off the 2016 season at 4-6 before the team decided to just throw the ball on nearly every play. It worked out well until the NFC Championship Game, where their one-dimension offense really took a nose dive against the Atlanta Falcons.
In order for the Packers to take the next step in 2017, they are going to have to bring in a running back, and it better not be Eddie Lacy. While Lacy has said the Packers want to bring him back, he is not the right player for the job, as the Packers need a guy who can catch the ball out of the backfield. Charles would give Rodgers a player like he has never had before in the backfield, while opening up big plays downfield for the likes of Jordy Nelson and Ty Montgomery.
Montgomery did a nice job at running back last season, but his best value could be as someone who can play both wideout and running back in 2017. The Packers need to bring in a player who can carry the load on at least first and second down, and Charles could be that kind of player for them. Green Bay is very close to being a Super Bowl contender next season, but if Rodgers does not get help in the backfield, it could be another season without a ring for the Packers.
