Legally blind Flames fan watches first NHL game
Thanks to technology, a legally blind Calgary Flames fan got to see her favorite team play for the first time.
Technology is incredible. Every day, it seems like a groundbreaking thing is getting introduced. Perhaps no field sees as many breakthroughs as the medical field. It’s hard to believe how far medical technology has come since the first open heart surgery.
One of the newest and most intriguing areas explored has been vision. New glasses and surgeries are allowing legally blind people to experience sight. The Calgary Flames got in on the action, allowing a legally blind fan to watch her first NHL game.
The special glasses come from a company called eSight. It has a camera inside, which allows the user to see his or her surroundings. Olivia has been legally blind since she was diagnosed with bilateral retinoblastoma at fourth months old. She lost all of the sight in her right eye at the age of two.
“They’ve gone above and beyond in helping her see players on the bench,” said eSight’s director of marketing Jeff Fenton, via 660News. “…fist-bumping as they come out even standing with the anthem signer so it’s just been an amazing experience and the Flames have been awesome to really give Olivia a ounce and a lifetime opportunity.”

Olivia picked a great game to see, as Calgary beat the New York Islanders 5-2 on Sunday. Not only are the Flames doing some incredible stuff in their community and off the ice, they’ve been hot on the ice. After a slow start, Calgary has won seven straight games and are in prime position to move into one of the Pacific Division’s top three spots. Currently, they occupy the first wild card spot in the Western Conference.
